There is a chill in the air and the sun is still out at times. Summer is over and our autumn has begun here in Vancouver. However, for many, the return to fall can be too crazy.
Children are back to school and structured activities. The family calendar of events can appear overwhelming. Perhaps you are prepping for a work project and time is at a premium. Then again, maybe it’s the pressure to feel happy because everyone else appears to be.
If you’re feeling stressed out this fall, take note of these 4 stress relievers to manage your life more effectively.
- Take a Walk
Taking a stroll through a park or around a pleasant neighborhood can shift your mind into a state of relaxation. A study done in the U.K. found that walking through green spaces can put your brain into a state of meditation (Good thing Vancouver is an evergreen city). Walking can help lower your stress levels and improve your well-being.
- The Beach
If you are near any of the many beaches in Vancouver, plan to spend some time at one of them. The beach is a good place to be. Yes, even in the fall and winter months. It tends to make people much happier. The waves have a repetitive and calming sound. And, the air refreshing. Take time to sit and breathe and if possible allow yourself to drift into a meditative state.
For many the beach is synonymous with swimming. Swimming outside is too cold in the fall and winter months. However, if you like to swim, seek out an of the indoor pool in your community. There are many emotional benefits that come with swimming. Swimming decreases anxiety, depression and general stress. And, swimming boosts self-confidence.
And if swimming isn`t your thing then find another activity – yoga, badminton, hockey, dance – and do it once a week, at least.
- Gardening
Gardening in Vancouver can be all year round – or almost. Gardening is creative and meditative. It helps you focus on the task at hand. When you can focus 100% in the moment then you can let go of all your stress and worry. After gardening you feel ‘a good tired’ and can celebrate what you have accomplished and created with your own garden.
- Quick Getaway
Sometimes on-going stress signals the need for a change. A getaway is a break from reality. It is something to look forward to. It is a needed change to help recharge your batteries – a rejuvenation break. We are human beings not human doings. Looking forward to a weekend getaway can minimize the stress and give you a renewed purpose. Vancouver and BC as a whole are filled with adventurous places to seek out. So, it does not have to cost a lot to plan a weekend away in this beautiful province. Stepping away from your daily routine helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Carve out some time for yourself during the coming fall and winter months so that you can rejuvenate and manage your life more effectively.
